FSO Professional Development

New to the FSO role, or handling it on top of your regular duties? Here's what the role involves, how we can build it out for you, and where to find growth and training resources.

What Is an FSO?

Understanding the Role

A Facility Security Officer (FSO) is the person responsible under NISPOM for implementing and overseeing a facility’s security program by protecting classified information, managing personnel security, and demonstrating compliance to DCSA during security reviews. It’s a role most people never trained for. Many FSOs are appointed because they’re senior, trusted, or simply available, not because they came up through a security career.

That’s not a flaw in the system. It’s just the reality of how the role gets filled, especially at small and mid-sized companies. If that’s you, you’re in exactly the right place.

The opportunity

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

If you've recently been appointed FSO and don't come from a security background, you're likely facing a role with real consequences and very little formal guidance. Historically, the only paths to learning it have been government resources, professional associations, or trial and error under audit pressure.

We built our consulting services to solve exactly this problem, so you don't have to piece it together on your own. If you'd rather learn the material yourself at your own pace, we also offer books, training, and courses through our sister sites.

How We Help You Build It

Consulting That Does the Heavy Lifting

This is where Thrive Analysis Group comes in directly. Rather than handing you a manual and wishing you luck, we build your security program alongside you and train your team to run it. It’s the same core approach we bring to every FSO engagement:

  • Security Program Development — we design a compliant, audit-ready program built around your organization, not a generic template
  • The FSO Workbook — our proprietary tool translates NISPOM into role-based tasks and documentation you can actually use
  • Gold Standard Criteria & Self-Inspection — we prepare you for what DCSA is really looking for, not just a pass/fail checklist

This isn't a generic checklist handed off and forgotten. We work alongside your team until the program is genuinely yours to run, and we're glad to stay on as an advisor after that if you'd like us to.

Our story

Built From Firsthand Experience

When Jeff Bennett became an FSO, he quickly realized he’d stumbled into something good. Stumbled, because there was no clear career path to follow and no books written specifically for FSOs working within NISPOM. He had to look outside the industry entirely for resources.

So he set out to fix that. Jeff started Red Bike Publishing to produce print editions of the NISPOM, then began writing the books he wished he’d had when he was starting out: guides created from real, practical experience with the regulation, not just theory. He reached that goal within a few years, and the books have since stood the test of time through multiple NISPOM updates, including the newest CFR revision.

Whether you want us to build your program directly or you'd rather learn the material yourself, we built these resources to help you get there.

Common questions

Questions New FSOs Ask Us

Yes! Most FSOs don't. That's exactly what our consulting is built around: we do the heavy lifting and train you and your team as we go.

Our books and courses, available through NISPOM Central, are built for exactly that kind of self-directed learning.

If you need your program built, audit-ready, and your team trained now, that's consulting. If you want to build your own knowledge at your own pace, or you're already an experienced security professional looking to go deeper, our resource library is the better starting point.
